fictional character in children's literature.
He appears in some 14 books written by Michael
Bond and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum and has
evolved into a franchise. The illustrations
show him more as a teddy bear than a real bear,
in the original style of Winnie-the-Pooh. This
gentle bear was found at Paddington in London.
In the first story, he is found there by the
Brown family sitting on his suitcase with a
note attached to his coat which reads "Please
look after this bear. Thank you."

Israeli politician and a retired general. He
served as Prime Minister of Israel, from March
2001 until April 2006. He fell into a coma and
has not regained consciousness since then.
The new party created by him, with Olmert having
stepped in as its leader, won the most Knesset
seats in the 2006 elections, and is now the
senior coalition partner in the Israeli government.

German author. He was born in the Free City
of Danzig. In 1945 he came as a refugee to West
Germany, but in his fiction he frequently returns
to the Danzig of his childhood. He is best known
for his first novel, The Tin Drum, a key text
in European magic realism. In 2006, controversy
followed his belated admission that he had been
a member of the Waffen-SS in the last stages
of World War II.

Korean novelist. He was born in Xinjing, Manchuria
during the period of Japanese rule. His family
returned to Korea after liberation in 1945.
In 1993, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison
for an unauthorized visit to North Korea. He
was freed by presidential pardon in 1998.
His novels include The Guest, The Garden of
Yesterday, and Monsieur Han.
